HBO SERIES "TRUE BLOOD" PICKED UP FOR SECOND SEASON

HBO RENEWS TRUE BLOOD, NEW SERIES FROM “SIX FEET UNDER”

CREATOR ALAN BALL, FOR SECOND SEASON,

WITH PRODUCTION TO BEGIN EARLY NEXT YEAR

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17, 2008 – HBO has renewed the new drama series TRUE BLOOD for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, Programming Group and West Coast Operations. Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes early next year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2009.

“We are absolutely thrilled that the critics and our viewers have embraced TRUE BLOOD,” noted Lombardo. “Alan Ball has done it again – made an addictive series that is unlike any other.”

“I am thrilled to be able to continue to work with such a talented group of writers, cast and crew to explore the characters and world created by Charlaine Harris in her novels,” Ball said. “It really is a joy to go to work every day and I couldn’t be happier to be back home at HBO.”

The Sept. 7 debut episode is proving to be a hit with HBO audiences, attracting more than four million viewers to date, while the debut of the second episode on Sept. 14 posted an unprecedented 24% gain in viewers over the first week’s debut.

Critics across the country in Detroit, Baltimore, Denver and Orlando have proclaimed TRUE BLOOD one of the best new shows on TV. USA Today called it “wildly imaginative,” with “one of the best ensembles of the new series,” while the Washington Post found it “audacious, outrageous and playfully grisly.” TV Guide hailed the show as “graphically sexy and scary, and often wildly funny,” and “a broadly entertaining, deliciously twisted slice of modern Southern Gothic.”

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, TRUE BLOOD takes place in the not-too-distant future, when vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans for their fix. Set in a backwoods Louisiana town, the show follows the romance between waitress Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin), who can read minds, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer). Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy®-winning HBO series “Six Feet Under” ) created and executive produced the show, as well as wrote and directed episodes of the series, which is based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The cast also includes Ryan Kwanten as Sookie’s brother Jason, Rutina Wesley as her best friend Tara Thornton, Sam Trammell as Sookie’s good-hearted boss Sam Merlotte and Nelsan Ellis as Lafayette Reynolds, a cook at Merlotte’s

Season one credits: TRUE BLOOD is created by and executive produced by Alan Ball; based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris; co-executive producer, Brian Buckner; supervising producer, Nancy Oliver; produced by Carol Dunn Trussell; producer, Alexander Woo; co-producer, Raelle Tucker.

"Out For Blood", an Interview With True Blood's Nelsan Ellis - WCT

Lawrence Ferber of the Windy City Times has posted an interview with Nelsan Ellis, Lafayette on True Blood:

“Lawrence Ferber: What are the biggest differences between the Lafayette of the novels and the HBO series?

Nelsan Ellis: In the book I don't like him. Alan's Lafayette has dimensions-the book's doesn't. He's flamboyant and wears makeup in the book. That was a huge challenge for me because I came in originally trying to do my idea of what a drag queen was. The description is: He's a masculine man with lipstick and makeup on. I was like, "Huh? How you gonna do that?" I had to work on making him a real person because Alan wants to see a real person and not a stereotype. But we mixed it up so he's masculine and feminine and those colors can come out whenever.”

True Blood In The News - Various Articles Around The Internet

True Blood coverage by the media has been flying fast and furious around last weeks premiere of the series. Here are some link that may be of interest to fans.

HBO gets an infusion of Oh-positive 'Blood' - Robert Bianco, USA Today
“Sexy, witty and unabashedly peculiar, True Blood is a blood-drenched Southern Gothic romantic parable set in a world where vampires are out and about and campaigning for equal rights. Part mystery, part fantasy, part comedy, and all wildly imaginative exaggeration, Blood proves that there's still vibrant life — or death — left in the "star-crossed lovers" paradigm. You just have to know where to stake your romantic claim.”
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/reviews/2008-09-04-true-blood_N.htm

'True Blood': Undead On Arrival - Tom Shales, Washington Post
“To become a fan of "True Blood," viewers will have to call upon or develop a considerable case of sang-froid in the most literal sense. I felt my knees weaken a few times -- and heck, I made it through "Hostel" with little trouble. But then "True Blood" is not a horror film and is more likely to be after a knowing laugh than a cheap shudder. Paquin keeps her character teetering on a very provocative edge, so that even a simple line like "I'll get you some ketchup" seems wickedly witty in context.”

Vampires In Pop Culture: True Blood Debunks Myths And Legends - Anika Harris, The Frisky
“Vampires are making another resurgence in pop culture. HBO’s True Blood premiered on Sunday and Twilight the movie will be in theaters November 21. Also, the Southern vampire novels by Charlaine Harris, which True Blood is based on, remain extremely popular. Unlike other vampire entertainment, True Blood is debunking some of the vampire myths and legends, in order to make its world believable. And along the way, it may create some new ones.”
http://www.thefrisky.com/post/246-vampires-in-pop-culture-true-blood-debunks-myths-and-legends/

Give HBO SOme Credit - Joshua Alston, Newsweek
“The credits for the new HBO series "True Blood" (from Alan Ball of "Six Feet Under" ) are the perfect amuse-bouche. The show is about vampires assimilating into rural Louisiana, and the credits are a flip book of Deep South postcards: images of hungry gators and modest homes, neon crosses and dirt roads. In the final shot, a woman is dunked for a river baptism and appears to emerge in hysterics. Either she's in rapture, or just a hairbreadth from drowning. This is the world of "True Blood," where quaint, romantic notions of the South are recast with dread.”

Best Lesbian Week Ever Covers True Blood - AfterEllen.com

The August 29th, 2008 entry of AfterAllen.com’s “Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever” touches upon the sexuality of the characters in True Blood, with the report that HBO says "all the vampire characters in the series are actually pansexual."

There’s, also, a direct quote from Alan Ball on the “lesbian energy” of vampire Pam:

“"There is a vampiress who works [at the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport] who definitely exudes a certain lesbian energy in a really kind of entertaining and seductive way. Pam is a woman who was made vampire in Victorian England, and she dresses all goth when she's at work, but when she's not at work she basically wears Chanel."
